Why we measure something as human as coaching

"Coaching can't be measured." We hear it from almost every coach we talk to. And they're half right — just about the wrong half.

You can't measure the moment something clicks for a client. You can't measure the right silence at the right time. True. But you can measure whether those moments are getting more frequent for you, or not. That's the whole game for us.

Vanity dashboard vs. real development

Most coaching apps work like this: you run a session, it spits out a number, and you either feel great or feel awful. The number is nice. It teaches you nothing. It's a vanity dashboard — looks smart, moves your coaching not at all.

We have an internal rule every feature has to pass before we even start building it. Two questions: Does it develop a specific skill? And does that development show up in something we actually measure? If a feature only measures but develops nothing, it's decoration. We cut it.

You first, then the AI

Here's one concrete thing we're a little proud of. When you have a session transcript, you don't get a verdict handed to you. First you mark the spots yourself — where you felt you got stuck, where you advised instead of asked, where you skipped an emotion, where you led instead of followed the client.

Only then does it reveal what the AI saw at those same spots. And you compare.

The gap between "the AI tells you what you did wrong" and "the AI confirms what you already suspected" is the whole gap between obedience and judgment.

Because the skill a coach needs most isn't taking feedback well. It's noticing your own coaching in real time — catching yourself, right as it happens, sliding into advice. Being told over and over never trains that. Guessing first and checking after trains exactly it.

One number that grows with you

On top of all that sits the Breakthrough Score — one number for how often your clients actually shift. It doesn't move because you logged more hours. It moves when you get better. And when we don't have enough data yet, we say so, instead of showing you a percentage we made up.

That's the right half of "coaching can't be measured" for us. We don't measure the spark. We measure whether you're producing more of it. And your own measured history — session after session — is something no one takes from you and no app copies on your behalf.

That's how we build Practice.coach. Not to grade you, but to make you a better coach — and prove it.
